Teaching English to Karen Hilltribe Children

This trip will give you the opportunity to become part of a small community, helping to teach English to children at the local school.

The project is based at the school in the small village of Guid, 105km north of Chiang Mai. During your time volunteering at the school you will help to teach a class of 20-25 students aged between 6 to 15 years. You will teach in the mornings and in the afternoon have time to prepare for the next days lessons, explore the surrounding area, there is a beautiful waterfall in the village, or visit nearby towns.

In the village you will stay with a local family in their traditional Thai home. Accommodation is basic but comfortable; you will have a mattress, mosquito net and fan. There is no running hot water within the village so showering involves pouring tepid water over yourself from a cask. The toilet is Asian squat style with no toilet tissue. There is electricity so you will be able to charge mobile phones, camera batteries etc. There is usually good mobile phone coverage in the village.

The village of Guid is a small village with a population of around 300. There are basic amenities available in the village such as a convenience store and small market. The nearest large town is Matong, 30km away, where there are larger shops and internet cafes. Buses run approximately every 2 hours between Guid and Matong and cost approximately 60 Baht each way.

Helping to teach at the school is an immensely rewarding experience. The school has 10 classrooms teaching to around 250 children from the surrounding area aged from 7 to 15 years old. As a volunteer you will teach a class alone and can prepare your own lessons, however the school does have a full time voluntary English teacher (English - Mr. Tony) who has been at the school for just over a year, he will be your guide throughout the trip advising you on lesson plans and teaching aids and can be easily contacted for help during lesson times. The children are extremely keen to learn English and practice with an English speaking person. Your time volunteering here will be a great help to Mr. Tony who is the sole English speaking teacher at the school as the village cannot afford to pay for other teachers.
